Bio

fitton portrait 2

Michael Hower is a photographer living in Enola, Pennsylvania. His formal artistic education began with courses at Lebanon Valley College, Annville, PA, and the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, Lancaster, PA. Further study carried him to Harrisburg Area Community College, Harrisburg, PA, and the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD, where he focused on painting, design and ceramics. He picked up a digital camera for the first time in 2012 and fell in love with the medium. His photography skills are self-taught and reflect his broader artistic training.

Michael’s work focuses on historical themes and showcases a personal journey of learning about local history and heritage. Through photography he documents his discovery of abandoned historical sites as well as their surrounding environments. Michael travels extensively throughout the Mid-Atlantic region seeking out the places and stories of our past.

His long-term projects of documenting Pennsylvania’s extensive canal system and ghost towns of the Mid-Atlantic region are ongoing.

Process Statement

Digital photography is about information. Besides gathering light, the image sensor of a digital camera is a data collector. I use a technique called “exposing to the right” in conjunction with the RAW image file to capitalize on the full capabilities of that data collection. With this technique the goal is to collect as much information as possible in order to get the correct exposure with better, richer tones, colors, and details in the digital “darkroom.” Modern digital cameras display an image histogram that depicts the number of pixels at each tonal value. More information can be obtained from a brighter exposure (i.e., the right side of the histogram) than from a darker exposure (i.e., the left side of the histogram).

Therefore, the goal in “exposing to the right” is to push the graph as far right as possible without losing data. (Care must be taken to avoid making the highlights of an image white, since pure white contains zero bits of data.) The image can then be “pulled back” on a computer to create a “correct“ exposure. The exposing to the right technique increases image file sizes by up to 50%, generating more usable data.

Artist’s Statement

I capture history using modern photography by portraying human objects/structures in modified environments now devoid of human activity. I convey themes of wear, deterioration, and nature’s reclamation of manmade architecture and landscapes. My photographs convey my efforts to find historical objects/structures and present them in a way that reveals nuances not readily apparent. I show that past generations are written large on today’s environment.

My artwork is not only about finished photographs and their accompanying technical aspects. The final photograph is the culmination of a process that includes learning local history and lore, consulting maps, and engaging in place-seeking journeys. My photographs are of places hidden in plain sight … places in our proverbial backyards. The time I spend searching out subjects invariably leads me to acquire new perspectives. Compared with when I first began this work, I now look at my surroundings differently and with a new sense of appreciation.
