Lock Ridge Iron Company in Alburtis, PA started in 1868 and was soon bought by Welsh immigrant David Thomas: becoming the Thomas Iron Company. Lock Ridge was a hot blast furnace, a technology which Thomas reportedly brought with him from Britain in the 1830s. After changing hands several more times, it is widely believed to be one of the last operating iron furnaces in the United States – staying active into the early 20th century.
