The Key Lock (Branch 6) was once the linchpin along the Pine Grove Branch of the Union Canal. It served as the guard lock, regulating the flow and level of water along the canal. This lock, along with the dam beside it, held back a five-mile long reservoir that kept the canal full. When the dam burst in the 1860s the Branch Canal was deemed not repairable. Key Lock has sat idle since.
