At the time of its construction the hot blast furnace at Hopewell Village, an iron plantation in southeastern PA, was the future of iron making. Hot blast furnaces utilized anthracite coal and a blast of pre-heated air to produce more iron. By the 1850’s the furnace fell into disrepair due to possible structural defects and the cost entailed in having anthracite, which doesn’t exist locally, shipped.
