The Cliffs was the Georgian style country house of Joshua Fisher of Philadelphia. The house was built in 1753 and became an important site during the American Revolution. Benjamin Franklin’s daughter, Sarah Franklin Bache, belonged to the Revolutionary Ladies Association which was an organization set up to aid the fledgling Continental Army. This house is where she led her sewing group in making 2200 shirts for soldiers at Valley Forge. The house became vacant in the 1960s and suffered from years of vandalism until it was gutted by fire in the 1980s. The masonry shell remains in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park.
