The Thomas Iron Company was built by Welshman David Thomas in 1854. He produced the first successful anthracite coal powered iron furnace in America. The furnace was built on the banks of the Lehigh River north of Allentown, Pennsylvania. A planned company town arose next to the furnace, Hokendauqua. Not many details survive about day to day operations there, and based on the ruins left it is hard to envision the full scale of the operation. The company was a success though. They survived multiple economic panics which doomed many similar companies. An attempt to modernize was made in 1924, but it was too late and by 1927 Thomas Iron Company had been bypassed by new technology.
